Hello Sunrise Toastmasters Members and guests!
Rewind from May 27
This meeting was held at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in the AHEC Conference Room #3 (formerly known as 0031) with 9 members present. President Summer Murphy opened our meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance before quickly turning the meeting over to Jenna Willingham to lead as Toastmaster for the morning. As her theme for this morning’s meeting unfolded, she invited the participants to celebrate the oddities of everyday life. The concept of society, after all, is an operating system created by peculiar (Word of the Day) humans. In short, nothing about life is ‘normal’ – and that’s a great thing!
The first speaker for the day was Zach Sullivan, who completed his third project titled, ‘Mountains Beyond Mountains.’ Zach endeavored to persuade everyone into reading a book that shaped his career goals and altered his outlook on life. Every Duke University freshman is introduced to this captivating story of Duke alum Paul Farmer’s extraordinary life, but not all those freshmen evaluate their aspirations against it like Zach did. Challenged by Dr. Farmer’s approaches to inequality, he has now spent a good portion of his time living and thinking from other points of worldview. Great message, Zach!
The second speaker, Summer Murphy, broke ground on her Technical Presentations manual with a speech titled, “Inbox Management.” From her years of experience owning a web development company, she has seen email stump clients from time to time. The average person might not know the “how” and “why” of email exchange. To shed some light on the matter, Summer taught the audience how email works, then cleverly demonstrated the main reasons for email backfire and what emailers can do to prevent them. Thank you, Summer, for a very interesting and helpful speech!
Topicsmaster Angela Marsh led the group in themed Table Topics series that fit well with the Toastmasters’ theme of peculiarity. A special thanks to Phil Monroe and Mike Stipanov for evaluating the speeches, to Dave Burr for serving as Timer/Grammarian, and to Bryan Alston for evaluating the meeting in general.
