Hello Sunrise Toastmasters Members and guests!
Rewind from October 9
This meeting was held at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in the North Tower (Room NT102A) and started at 7:00 AM. We had a total of 9 members and 1 guest present at our meeting (welcome back Brian!).
Vice President of Education Esther Khoury opened our meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and shared exciting Club news. Last night, Dave Burr represented Sunrise Toastmasters in a district competition for ‘Speech Evaluators’ and came in second place! Nice job, Dave! Next, Lolita Henley took over as Toastmaster for the morning. In recognition of Toastmasters International’s 90th anniversary, she helped us get familiar with the organization’s humble beginnings. Her chosen word of the day: lexicographer.
The first speaker, Tim Henley, completed project #2 in the Competent Communicator manual, titled ‘Project: Storm Fury.’ His well-researched history lesson on hurricanes proved to be a relevant topic as much of the coast still recovers from Hurricane Joaquin. The second speaker, Jenna Willingham, gave an unrehearsed, unplanned pocket speech titled, ‘Ode to the Oxford Comma.’ She shared her penchant for traditional formalities, even if the modern world passes them by.
Angela Ligon led the club in Table Topics by celebrating the lesser-known October holidays. The club enjoyed a full eight rounds of table topics before moving into evaluations. Thanks to Phil Stringer and Angela Ligon for serving as evaluators, to Dave Burr for evaluating the meeting in general, and to Lisa Zimmershied for serving as Timer/Grammarian.
As one final reminder for all members this week: club dues are due today, October 10. To pay online, please go to Club Central. Also please remember to render $6.00 to Steve Stephens next week for local club dues.
