Hello Sunrise Toastmasters Members and guests! And welcome to 2016!
Rewind from January 8
This meeting was held at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in the North Tower (Room NT102A) and started at 7:00 AM with 12 members and one guest present (Welcome, Adeyemo!).
President Summer Murphy opened our meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. Next, she handed it over to Walt Abele to lead the meeting as Toastmaster for the morning. 2016 is the Year of Many Things… what will you make it? Walt chose prescient – an uncommon, yet useful word – as Word of the Day.
The first speaker, Lisa Zimmerschied, completed her second project in the Competent Communicator manual, titled ‘The Uneasy Traveler’s Survival Guide.’ As an authority on the subject, she gave a few free tips for calmer vibes when traveling. (Many people even stayed after the meeting to hear more!). The second speaker, Steve Stephens, completed a persuasive project in the same manual, titled ‘Toastmasters for Everyone’. Each person who embarks on a Toastmasters journey has a ‘why’. As Steve reminded us all, one’s steps may seem small, but they are never insignificant. The third speaker, Lolita Henley, completed a speech titled ‘My New Life Destinations.’ She urged attendees to consider an alternative route to their typical New Years’ Resolution(s) by instead living into a piece of your story that you create. According to Lolita, language alone – whether spoken or thought – is a powerful mechanism for change.
Jenna Willingham led the club in Table Topics with a collection of could-be resolutions (or ‘new life destinations’!). As participants drew these resolutions out of a cup, each relied on quick wit, humor, or personal experience to handle the task with ease. The club enjoyed 6 fun rounds before moving into evaluations. Thanks to Angela Marsh, Tim Murphy, and Jenna Willingham for serving as evaluators, to Summer Murphy for evaluating the meeting in general, and to Dave Burr for serving as Timer/Grammarian.
