Our Treasurer Tim Murphy began the meeting by sharing meaningful insights on the intentional efforts made by organizations to ensure a diverse range of individuals are considered and selected for employment opportunities, highlighting that different viewpoints can lead to more robust decision-making processes and better outcomes for the organization, and leading us to the moment of silence in support and acknowledgement of Black Lives Matter movement. Tim also introduced the bias flag and encouraged us to use it to support our journey of becoming better speakers, then turned the meeting over to our Toastmaster John Doggett. John introduced the word of the day, “leadership,” also gave a chance for everyone to introduce themselves briefly, including all our open house meeting guests!
Toastmaster Kerstin Haase introduced our sole speaker, Toastmaster Summer Murphy, who delivered a captivating speech on glossophobia, the fear of public speaking. Summer eloquently described glossophobia as an intense and often irrational fear or anxiety experienced when addressing a group. She emphasized its wide-ranging impact, from mild nervousness to severe anxiety, highlighting the valuable role of Toastmasters in helping individuals overcome this challenge. In her concluding remarks, she shared an inspiring message: “Don’t wait for things to become easier, as they will never be.” Kerstin provided insightful feedback, acknowledging Summer’s strengths and offering areas for improvement. Well done, Summer!
Toastmaster Savannah Murphy skillfully led an engaging table topics session, presenting thought-provoking questions to elicit spontaneous responses from participants, including our guests. The purpose of this interactive segment was to enhance our ability to think on our feet, construct coherent thoughts, and deliver effective impromptu responses.
Toastmaster Tina Joe served as a General Evaluator, offering feedback on the meeting. Toastmaster Anu Parvathaneni provided the Timer report, ensuring that each segment adhered to the allotted time. And Toastmaster Dave Burr presented the Grammarian report, emphasizing effective language usage.
John smoothly handed the meeting over to Tim to adjourn the meeting.
