This week’s meeting began with a warm welcome from our President, Tina Joe. The meeting then moved into the One World, Many Voices segment, led by Toastmaster Gulnara. She shared a thoughtful message about the many voices we encounter on social media and how, despite often being well-intentioned, prolonged exposure to those voices can sometimes lead us to question ourselves. Gulnara emphasized the importance of stepping back, listening with intention, and remaining present in the moment without distraction.
Following this, Tina Joe briefly introduced the Bias Flag and explained its purpose. The Bias Flag is a tool our club uses to encourage inclusive and mindful language throughout our meetings.
The meeting was then handed over to our Toastmaster of the Day, Savvy, who reviewed the meeting roles and noted that we were missing both a speaker evaluator and a grammarian. Toastmasters Summer and Kerstin graciously volunteered to fill those roles. Savvy then introduced the Word of the Day, dog days, defined as “the hottest part of the summertime (usually between July and August in the Northern Hemisphere), or a period of stagnation or inactivity.” With that, they guided us through an engaging and well-organized meeting.
We had two speakers this week. Toastmaster Chang delivered a speech titled “When Hope Is Leveraged,” sharing a personal reflection on ambition, risk, and what happens when the pressure to succeed becomes deeply personal. A memorable takeaway from his speech was the quote, “Hope should never be leveraged.”
Our second speaker, Toastmaster Diana, delivered a speech from the Dynamic Leadership path titled “The Power of Teams.” She explored three leadership styles she consistently returns to: affiliative, altruistic, and democratic. Drawing on her experiences with a variety of leadership approaches, Diana explained why these three styles continue to resonate with her. She opened her speech with a quote from John Maxwell: “He who thinks he leads, but has no followers, is only taking a walk.”
Table Topics were led by Toastmaster Abdulrahman, who kept the session lighthearted and engaging, making it easy for members to jump in and respond. Questions included: What is a small disaster you’ve caused without meaning to? What snack becomes a dangerous weapon during a heat wave? What silly hidden talent would you reveal if asked to impress a crowd? And what snacks keep disappearing in your house, and who do you suspect is responsible?
Next, we moved into our Breakfast of Champions segment for those on the East Coast of the United States, also known as Lunch or Dinner of Champions depending on your location. This portion of the meeting focuses on evaluations and feedback. Tina Joe led the evaluation team, highlighting how effectively Savvy managed last-minute schedule adjustments, the thoughtful Word of the Day selection, and the strong performances from both speakers. One area for improvement noted during the session was maintaining awareness of the timer throughout the meeting.
Speaker evaluations were delivered by Toastmasters Matthew and Summer, who commended the speakers for their impactful messages, authenticity, strong eye contact, and effective pacing. Summer noted that Diana selected a compelling topic and presented it with a well-organized structure.
Toastmasters Kenny and Kerstin contributed to the meeting’s success by serving as Timer and Grammarian, respectively. Together, they helped keep the meeting on track by monitoring speech timing and tracking filler words throughout the session.
The meeting adjourned right at 7:58 AM EST, and we are already looking forward to next week’s meeting.
