This week’s meeting kicked off with a warm welcome from our President, Tina Joe. This was followed by the One World, Many Voices segment led by Toastmaster Syed, who shared a message regarding the impact of climate change in his local area, stating that it’s time for people to wake up. He went on to note an increasing utilization of solar energy and hybrid vehicles as positive steps toward counteracting climate change.
Afterward, Tina Joe briefly introduced the Bias Flag and explained its purpose. The Bias Flag is a tool our club uses to encourage inclusive and mindful language throughout our meetings.
The meeting was then turned over to our Toastmaster of the Day, Kenny, who welcomed our guest in attendance and led a round of introductions. Kenny introduced the Word of the Day, burnout, defined as “the state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged or excessive work-related stress, often accompanied by reduced motivation, detachment, and decreased effectiveness,” and encouraged members to use the word throughout the meeting. With that, she guided us through a well-organized meeting.
We had two speakers this week. Toastmaster Robert delivered a speech from the Presentation Mastery Pathway, Writing a Speech with Purpose, titled “A Process with Progress.” He spoke candidly about a personal battle that had caused him to miss several meetings, emphasizing that he continues to make progress and that success looks different for everyone. He concluded by asking the group what process you want to progress.
Our second speaker, Toastmaster Chang, presented a speech titled “My First Taste of America.” He talked through a series of experiences from when he first came to America. These included things like his first taste of fear, that American food was dangerous, and how America would rename him. He also explained how American food redeemed itself not through McDonald’s, but through Hungry-Man frozen dinners.
Table Topics were led by Toastmaster Diana, who crafted questions to encourage Word of the Day usage. Questions included: What is your favorite way to recharge when your batteries are running low, what is one simple thing that instantly gives you more energy, when was the last time you took a break and came back better than before, what activity can you do for hours without noticing time passing, who or what helps you ignite your enthusiasm when you lose your spark, and if you could only choose one thing to focus your energy on, what would it be?
Next, we moved into our Breakfast of Champions segment for those on the East Coast of the United States, also known as Lunch or Dinner of Champions depending on your location. This portion of the meeting marks our evaluation and feedback session. Toastmaster Gulnara led the evaluation team, highlighting the excellent One World, Many Voices segment, praising the stories from our scheduled speakers, noting the engaging Table Topics questions, and commending each speech evaluator for concise feedback with practical recommendations for improvement. She also gave a special shout-out to Kenny for sending the agenda out early and quickly asking for help to fill vacant roles.
Speaker evaluations were delivered by Toastmasters Yuko and Matthew. Yuko specifically commented that Robert’s speech was very compelling with a deeply personal message and that she loved the content. Matthew praised Chang for strong eye contact, vocal clarity, intentional pauses, and a relaxed presentation style.
Toastmasters Danielle and Tina Joe helped keep the meeting on track by serving as Timer and Grammarian, respectively, monitoring speech timing and tracking filler words throughout the meeting.
The meeting adjourned right at 8:00 AM EST, and we are already looking forward to next week’s meeting.
