President Tina Joe opened this week’s meeting with a warm welcome. Toastmaster Kenny followed with our One World, Many Voices segment, reflecting on the constant juggling act between work and parenting. Kenny shared how motherhood taught her the value of being present, and how both roles have shown her that perfection is never required. Following this, Tina Joe introduced the Bias Flag, highlighting how our club uses it to encourage mindful and inclusive language throughout every meeting.
Toastmaster Danielle served as Toastmaster of the Day for her very first time. Reviewing the agenda, she noted that since our first speaker was missing, the club would shift into an extended Table Topics session. Danielle introduced the Word of the Day, shambles, defined as “a state of confusion, bad organization, or untidiness”. She then kept the meeting running smoothly and efficiently.
Toastmaster Diana delivered our sole prepared speech of the week, titled “Negotiating Your Way Into the Australian Property Market.” Diana began by asking members what comes to mind when they hear the word negotiation. She then contrasted the UK property market with the Australian market, explaining how negotiation tactics must adapt based on location. Diana concluded with a strong takeaway: if an ending does not go the way you planned, the outcome can still be better than you imagined.
Toastmaster Sophie led an extended Table Topics session featuring questions built around the Word of the Day:
- What is the word most similar to shambles?
- If you could magically organize one part of your life that feels like shambles, what would it be?
- Could you connect the word shambles with your presentation today?
- If you were asked to clean a disorganized team project, how would you bring order to the shambles?
- Have you ever watched a movie, attended an event, or joined a meeting that was in shambles, what made it memorable?
- Do you think a little chaos can lead to a better result or is always in shambles?
During our Breakfast of Champions segment, General Evaluator Chang led the evaluation team, praising Danielle for managing the schedule pivot and noting that Diana’s speech gave everyone plenty to think about. Speaker Evaluator Yuko reviewed Diana’s presentation, praising her strong introduction, thoughtful structure, and insightful content. Finally, Toastmasters Syed and Gulnara served as Timer and Grammarian, keeping track of time and word usage to help the meeting run on schedule.
The meeting adjourned right at 8:02 AM EST, and we are already looking forward to next week’s meeting.
