Rewind from July 10
The meeting was held from 7:00AM – 8:00 AM at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in meeting room 0031 with 13 members present.
President Summer Murphy opened the meeting for her first time as Sunrise Toastmasters President and welcomed Dustin Johnson as first-time Toastmaster (a theme emerges!). Toastmaster Johnson welcomed us to consider 28 ways to ‘Motivate Yourself’, his theme for the morning. Dustin shared a curious term for Word of the Day: EPOC, which stands for ‘excessive post-exercise oxygen consumption.’ The first speaker, Cinthia Torres-FitzGerald, delivered her second speech titled ‘Kindness’ from Project #2 in the Competent Communicator manual. She spoke of the Dalai Llama’s inspiring and gentle life while applying his wisdom to recent tumultuous events. Her second speech left the club enlightened by her world views and excited to hear more speeches from her in the near future. The second speaker, Summer Murphy, delivered a stirring persuasive speech from Project #9 in the Competent Communicator manual, titling it “Don’t Blame the Victim.” She engaged the audience with the shocking truth of rape convictions and the judicial nightmare that rape victims often endure to see that justice is served. Her creative and memorable approach worked, as she left the audience moved and persuaded that victims of rape are never to blame.
Walt Abele led the club in a round of table topics and asked participants to ‘pick a side’ on certain aspects of current events. The members had fun with five rounds of Table Topics before moving into evaluations.
Thanks to Angela Ligon and Jenna Willingham for evaluating the speeches, to Dave Burr for evaluating the meeting in general, and to Tim Murphy for serving as Timer/Grammarian.
