This week’s meeting started off with a warm welcome from our President, Toastmaster Abdulrahman, followed by the One World Many Voices (OWMV) segment led by Toastmaster Summer. Summer offered a perspective on how society prioritizes its resources, advocating for the protection of vulnerable populations through the moving story of a child requiring specialized care and equipment. Summer closed with a powerful statement: “I believe part of how a government should be judged lies in how they treat their most vulnerable populations. And right now, this government is failing in that responsibility. I think the choice should be pretty obvious. Choose kids, not war.”
After the OWMV segment, Abdulrahman introduced the bias flag, a tool our club uses to encourage inclusive and mindful language. He then turned the meeting over to our Toastmaster of the Day, Toastmaster Tina Joe. Tina Joe introduced our Word of the Day, pinnacle, meaning the highest point of achievement. Using the movie Forrest Gump as a backdrop, Tina Joe described how the main character eventually reaches a point where he simply stops and pivots. This led to a key takeaway for the club: what do we do once we reach the pinnacle, and how do we ensure we do not stop, but rather pivot toward the next goal?
We had two speakers today. In a 5-7 minute untitled speech today, Toastmaster Savvy offered a glimpse into the challenges and benefits of an important milestone in their transition. They also shared some of the surprises and moments of relief that informed their own personal experience.
Our second speaker, Toastmaster Lisa, gave a speech titled A Yankee in the South, where she shared personal perceptions of regional culture. The speech explored how growing up in the North shaped her identity, what she learned from spending nearly 30 years in the South, and how those experiences influenced her without changing her core. Standout observations included the tendency for Southerners to avoid direct conflict and the realization that an honest opinion often comes with a hard truth, and that “y’all” simply flows better.
Table Topics was led by Abdulrahman, who had participants pick a number from one to twenty to determine their question. This creative approach led to unique prompts like: “Do you think mirrors get tired of seeing faces all day?”, “What object in your house seems the most suspicious?”, and “What item in your house has plastic on it for no good reason?”
The responses were just as entertaining. Toastmaster Gulnara suggested that mirrors likely love seeing faces and do not have a “bless your heart” attitude. Toastmaster Kate pivoted from her question to share a story about a recent hiking adventure, observing that as we get older, coordinating schedules becomes the biggest challenge to enjoying time with friends. Toastmaster Tim provided a clever callback to the Word of the Day, describing a spelunking adventure that led to the “lowest point,” nearly one hundred feet underground, only to end up in a cavern called the library, which is the literal opposite of a pinnacle.
Next, we moved into our Breakfast of Champions, led by General Evaluator Toastmaster Kerstin. Toastmaster Norris evaluated our first speaker, reinforcing that this club is a space where members are free to share what is on their hearts. Toastmaster Adnan evaluated our second speaker, highlighting her compelling storytelling and suggesting more intentional hand gestures for added impact. Toastmaster Robert and Toastmaster Melissa kept the meeting on track by timing speeches and tracking filler words throughout the morning.
The meeting adjourned exactly at 8:00 AM EST, and we look forward to next week’s meeting.
