This week’s meeting kicked off with a warm welcome from our President, Tina Joe. This was followed by the One World, Many Voices segment led by Toastmaster Matthew, who shared a message about how close friendships often drift apart as people grow older due to the increasing commitments and responsibilities of adult life. He spoke about the surprisingly high number of hours often cited as necessary to develop close friendships and concluded by encouraging us to stop pretending that maintaining those relationships is easy. Instead, he urged everyone to extend more grace, understanding, and presence when our paths do cross.
Afterward, Tina Joe briefly introduced the Bias Flag and explained its purpose. The Bias Flag is a tool our club uses to encourage inclusive and mindful language throughout our meetings.
The meeting was then turned over to our Toastmaster of the Day, Tim, who reviewed the meeting roles and noted that we were missing a speaker, a Table Topics Master, and a Grammarian. Tina Joe, Tim, and Kenny stepped up to fill those roles. Tim then introduced the Word of the Day, earnest, defined as “showing deep and serious intent, honesty, or a firm purpose,” and connected it to themes from his speech the previous week. With that, he guided us through an engaging meeting.
We had two speakers this week. Toastmaster Norris delivered a speech titled “Do You Know?” in which he discussed navigating the lengthy and often complex process of signing a parent up for Medicaid. He concluded with an important question for the audience: Do you know your loved ones’ healthcare directives?
Our second speaker, Tina Joe, presented a pocket speech titled “A Continuation of My Soap Box Speech.” She began with a brief recap of her previous presentation before expanding on its themes through the lens of current events. She shared how remaining faithful and maintaining a positive outlook have enriched her experiences and opened the door to new opportunities.
Table Topics were led by our Toastmaster of the Day, Tim, who quickly assembled a set of questions with the help of AI when the scheduled Table Topics Master was unavailable. Questions included: What was a time your earnest effort paid off in a big way? Is it possible to be too earnest in a casual workplace? Does social media make it harder or easier to be genuine? What is the difference between being polite and being truly sincere? and When did someone’s honest feedback change your perspective for the better?
Next, we moved into our Breakfast of Champions segment for those on the East Coast of the United States, also known as Lunch or Dinner of Champions depending on your location, which marks the evaluation and feedback portion of the meeting. Chang led the evaluation team, highlighting that although we were a small group, we were a mighty one, with many members taking on multiple roles to ensure the meeting’s success. He also praised the thoughtful topics chosen by the speakers and the excellent Table Topics questions that generated engaging responses.
Speaker evaluations were delivered by Toastmasters Kerstin and Summer, who praised the speakers’ impactful messages, conversational delivery, strong eye contact, effective vocal variety, and purposeful use of hand gestures. A memorable quote from Summer’s evaluation of Tina Joe’s pocket speech was, “Things don’t get easier; we get better at doing hard things.”
Toastmasters Tina Joe and Kenny helped keep the meeting on track by serving as Timer and Grammarian, monitoring speech timing and tracking filler words throughout the meeting.
During his closing remarks, Tim noted that an unexpected theme of the meeting had become “the brick the builder didn’t want.” Other memorable quotes and takeaways from the meeting included:
- “Many truths are said in jest.”
- “Know your audience.”
- “Can you weather the storm?”
Despite a smaller attendance and several members stepping into multiple roles, the meeting was filled with meaningful speeches, thoughtful discussion, and valuable feedback, showcasing the club’s commitment to supporting one another and making every meeting a success.
The meeting adjourned right at 7:59 AM EST, and we are already looking forward to next week’s meeting.
