Our President, Summer Murphy, commenced the meeting with a story of distressing incident occurred where two black individuals were unjustly detained, tortured, and humiliated by law enforcement, underscoring the persistent racial injustice. Despite legal consequences for the officers involved, it cannot erase the lasting impact on those affected. And she led us to the moment of silence in support and acknowledgement of the Black Lives Matter movement. Summer also introduced the bias flag, encouraging its use as a tool to foster growth in our journey toward becoming more effective speakers, handing over the reins to our Toastmaster for the day, Hema Kellett. Hema set the tone by introducing the word of the day, “Expectation,” aiming to let everyone use it!
Toastmaster Savannah Murphy introduced our first speaker, Toastmaster Saraswathi Mahalingam. Saraswathi delivered an engaging Icebreaker speech, sharing her personal story of navigating life’s challenges and joys. From the highs to the lows, she expressed gratitude to the audience for being part of her journey. Savannah raved about the exceptional job Saraswathi did during her first speech for Toastmasters. Well done, Saraswathi!
Toastmaster Tim Murphy introduced our second speaker, Toastmaster John Doggett. John delivered a speech titled “I’m Doing It for the Money,” sharing his experiences serving the community as a part of the Summerfield NC town council. Tim provided positive feedback, highlighting the speaker’s commitment to continuous improvement and acknowledged his skill in delivering captivating storytelling speeches.
Toastmaster Norris Bass led an engaging table topic session, presenting thought-provoking questions to elicit spontaneous and impactful responses. The interactive segment aimed to enhance participants’ ability to think on their feet, articulate thoughts effectively, and deliver impromptu responses with confidence. Excellent questions, Norris!
Toastmaster Anu Parvathaneni took on the role of General Evaluator, providing a comprehensive assessment of the meeting and recognizing outstanding performances. Toastmaster Summer Murphy delivered the Timer report, ensuring adherence to allotted time. Toastmaster Kerstin Haase presented the Grammarian report, offering feedback on language usage and suggestions for improvement.
