Rewind / Fast-Forward #15 (Oct. 16-23)

Hello Sunrise Toastmasters Members and guests!

Rewind from October 16

This meeting was held at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in the North Tower (Room NT102A) and started at 7:00 AM with a total of 10 members present.

Vice President of Education Esther Khoury opened our meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. She then shared exciting news about the upcoming District 37 Conference taking place next week (October 23-24) at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Fayetteville, NC. Anyone interested in viewing the agenda, registering, or sharing news of this conference may do so by following the hyperlinks. After that announcement, Esther welcomed up Jenna Willingham as Toastmaster for the morning. Inspired from an F. Scott Fitzgerald quote: “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall”, the morning’s theme celebrated autumn in all its splendor, revitalization, and adventure. To that end, Jenna chose “embark” as the Word of the Day.

The first speaker, Will Koppenhaver, completed project #2 in the Competent Communicator manual, titled ‘My Dad.’ He took a page out of his childhood writings to reflect on the qualities he admires about his dad. The audience really enjoyed Will’s . The second speaker, Esther Khoury, completed project #4 in the Interpretative Readings advanced manual, titled ‘Mom, April 6’. Her playful adaptation of a segment from a once-popular radio stretched her to use unique skills in her repertoire that aren’t normally seen in a speech. Everyone really enjoyed this entertaining, out-of-the-box spectacle! Incidentally, a theme of ‘family ties’ began to emerge out of the speaker topic choices that tied in nicely with the gist of the day.

Lisa Zimmershied led the club in Table Topics by giving participants a stab at some recent interview questions she handled. (Congratulations, by the way, on your new job, Lisa!) The club enjoyed 5 rounds of table topics before moving into evaluations. Thanks to Mike Stipanov and Walt Abele for serving as evaluators, to Phil Stringer for evaluating the meeting in general, and to Lolita Henley for serving as Timer/Grammarian.
