Hello Sunrise Toastmasters Members and guests!
Rewind from October 23:
This meeting was held at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in the West Auditorium (Room 1040) from 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM with 12 members.
Our long-lost President, Summer Murphy, has finally returned from an extended business trip with her husband and the opened our meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. Without much hesitation, she handed it off to Toastmaster Tim Murphy. Tim, a seasoned Toastmaster, grounded the club on this important day in Toastmasters history: October 23, 1924. 91 years ago, Ralph Smedley founded Toastmasters International, which is still equipping future leaders to speak their minds with conviction and confidence. To jazz up the day, he chose scuttlebutt as the Word of the Day.
The first speaker, Bryan Alston, delivered his Icebreaker speech. The audience enjoyed hearing his driving motivation to continue on, regardless of the circumstance. The impressive amount of memorized poetry added richness to his speech! The club gave Bryan a standing ovation and a commemorative pin for completing his first Toastmasters speech. Congrats, Bryan! The second speaker, Tim Henley, completed project #3 in the Competent Communicator manual, titled ‘I Have a Black Dog.’ His carefully-selected title shed a fresh light on the realities of depression. The members acknowledged Tim’s bravery in addressing such a misunderstood topic in the safe space Sunrise Toastmasters creates for all people.
Jenna Willingham led the club in Table Topics by inviting responses to various Toastmaster ‘Pro Tips’. The club enjoyed 10 reflective and insightful rounds of table topics before moving into evaluations. Thanks to Summer Murphy and Dave Burr for serving as evaluators, to Walt Abele for evaluating the meeting in general, and to Esther Khoury for serving as Timer/Grammarian.
Announcement: Beginning next week, we will resume our usual spot in the North Tower of Moses Cone Hospital (Room NT102A). As always, if the room does change, you can expect to be notified in advance of Friday morning.
