Rewind / Fast-Forward #41 (May 6-13)

Hello Sunrise Toastmasters Members and guests!

Rewind from May 6

This meeting was held at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in the AHEC Conference Rooms (room 0064) with 10 members and two guests present.

President Summer Murphy opened our meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance before quickly turning the meeting over to Joe Stack to lead as Toastmaster for the morning. He chose to weave a ‘Fresh Starts’ theme throughout the meeting with graduations, promotions, and new beginnings on his mind. In that spirit, the Word of the Day was commence.

The first speaker for the day was Zach Sullivan, who completed his second project titled, ‘The Promise of a Pencil.’ Through his many travels, Zach has fond memories of the time he spent working for the organization Pencils of Promise. As he shared founder Adam Braun’s experiences in foreign lands, he referenced all he’s experienced and learned that has shaped his worldview. According to Zach, we need only explore outside our comfort zones to see a greater human need – and a greater possibility of humankind.

The second speaker, Tim Murphy, led the club in an unconventional, engaging activity titled “An Aspirations Workshop.” Each Toastmaster across the globe joins a club with aspirations in mind. Tim encouraged us to put our goals to paper and direct our intentions toward them in the coming weeks and months. During the exercise, it became clear that we are an ambitious group of people, making great progress in our individual journeys. Sometimes, one only has to pause and consider the changes that are already happening to be further inspired and encouraged! As he usually does, Tim engaged us with his ambition, humor, and intellection a well-executed workshop.

Topicsmaster Walt Abele led the group in a thought-provoking series of table topics that befitted the ‘Fresh Starts’ theme. The club went six rounds in table topics before moving into evaluations. A special thanks to Tim Murphy and guest Rebecca for evaluating the speeches, to Jenna Willingham for serving as Timer/Grammarian, and to Summer Murphy for evaluating the meeting in general.
