Fast Forward/Rewind – August 21, 2026

This week’s meeting kicked off with a warm welcome from our President, Tina Joe. This was followed by the One World, Many Voices segment led by Toastmaster Abdulrahman, who shared a message about progress and growth, noting that they do not always stem from big decisions, but often from something much smaller. He explained that developing small habits is one of the most valuable skills for learning and personal growth.

Afterward, Tina Joe briefly introduced the Bias Flag and explained its purpose. The Bias Flag is a tool our club uses to encourage inclusive and mindful language throughout our meetings.

The meeting was then turned over to our Toastmaster of the Day, Yuko, who reviewed the meeting roles and noted that we were missing an evaluator, a role that Toastmaster Tim graciously volunteered to fill. Yuko then introduced the Word of the Day, optimal, defined as “best; most likely to bring success or advantage.” She provided the example, “Your vocal variety is optimal,” and encouraged members to use the word throughout the meeting. With that, she guided us through an engaging and well-organized program.

We had two speakers this week. Toastmaster Syed delivered a speech from the Presentation Mastery Pathway, Introduction to Body Language, titled “The Moment That Left Me Spellbound.” During a clinical rotation in Ireland, he made a stop in Galway, where the beauty of the landscape left him truly spellbound.

Our second speaker, Toastmaster Danielle, presented a speech from the Presentation Mastery Pathway, Introduction to Vocal Variety and Body Language, titled “My Relationship with Stage Fright.” She described her long-term battle with stage fright and how she has managed it throughout the years, ultimately learning not only to overcome it, but to embrace it. She concluded by challenging the group with the statement: “The next time you feel nervous, I invite you to let the lid off and embrace the nerves.”

Table Topics were led by Toastmaster Matthew, who structured his questions to encourage use of the Word of the Day across a mix of real-world topics and fun hypotheticals. He started with practical prompts, asking for the most optimal way to spend time before returning to work on Monday, how to handle unrealistic deadlines, and worst vacation experiences. From there, he shifted to creative scenarios, challenging members to navigate a breakdown on a deserted road with no cell service, picture life without online shopping, pick an ideal time period to visit, and name the worst universe to be trapped in.

Next, we moved into our Breakfast of Champions segment for those on the East Coast of the United States, also known as Lunch or Dinner of Champions depending on your location. This portion of the meeting marks our evaluation and feedback session. Toastmaster Gulnara led the evaluation team, highlighting the excellent One World, Many Voices segment, the strong speeches, and the engaging Table Topics questions. She also gave a special shout-out to Tina Joe for her incredible response to the question, “Imagine online shopping had never been invented. How would life be different?”

Speaker evaluations were delivered by Toastmasters Tim and Gulnara, who praised both speakers for their effective use of hand gestures, body language, and vocal variety, while noting that each successfully achieved the objectives of their respective Pathway projects. Tim also provided Syed with a thoughtful challenge to consider incorporating into future speeches.

Toastmasters Sophie and Kenny helped keep the meeting on track by serving as Timer and Grammarian, respectively, monitoring speech timing and tracking filler words throughout the meeting.

The meeting adjourned right at 8:00 AM EST, and we are already looking forward to next week’s meeting.
