Fast Forward/Rewind – July 17, 2026

This week’s meeting kicked off with a warm welcome from our President, Tina Joe. This was followed by the One World, Many Voices segment led by Toastmaster Dave, who shared a glimpse into the state of healthcare in the United States. He discussed the challenges of healthcare financing and argued that taking on debt to care for yourself makes little sense. He concluded by encouraging everyone to advocate for replacing the current system with universal healthcare.

Afterward, Tina Joe briefly introduced the Bias Flag and explained its purpose. The Bias Flag is a tool our club uses to promote inclusive and mindful language throughout our meetings.

The meeting was then turned over to our Toastmaster of the Day, Abdulrahman, who reviewed the meeting roles and filled the open Grammarian slot. Abdulrahman introduced the Word of the Day, luminary, defined as “a person who inspires or influences others; a source of light or brilliance.” He encouraged members to think about who inspires them and to use the word during the meeting. With that, he guided us through an engaging and well-organized agenda.

We had two speakers this week. Toastmaster Gulnara delivered a speech titled “Good Job!” This was a speech she had delivered a few months ago and was revisiting after incorporating feedback from her previous presentation. The speech focused on learning how to accept compliments from others and recognizing how much encouragement matters. Her message emphasized that people grow not only through correction, but also through encouragement and positive reinforcement.

Our second speaker, Toastmaster Sophie, delivered a speech titled “Life Itself Can Be a Luminary.” She spoke about three luminaries in her life: a mentor, curiosity, and life itself. She shared her realization that happiness often comes from ordinary things rather than the next accomplishment or achievement. She also discussed the importance of enjoying the present moment and noted that changing your environment does not always solve the underlying problem.

Table Topics were led by Toastmaster Diana, who centered the session around the Word of the Day. Questions included: What is one piece of advice that illuminated your life? What is more important, to shine brightly for yourself or shine for others? When have you unexpectedly become someone else’s role model? and Which historical figure would make the best Toastmaster?

Next, we moved into our Breakfast of Champions segment for those on the East Coast of the United States, also known as Lunch or Dinner of Champions depending on your location, which marks the evaluation and feedback portion of the meeting. Toastmaster Tina Joe led the evaluation team, highlighting the excellent One World, Many Voices segment, the strong Table Topics questions that incorporated the Word of the Day, and the impactful speeches that were presented. One suggestion for improvement was to be mindful of the timer and avoid going too far into the red.

Speaker evaluations were delivered by Toastmasters Savvy and Danielle, who praised the speakers’ powerful openings, strong conclusions, impactful messages, and effective pacing. Toastmasters Kerstin and Norris helped keep the meeting on track by serving as Timer and Grammarian, monitoring speech timing and tracking filler words throughout the meeting.

The meeting adjourned right at 7:59 AM EST, and we are already looking forward to next week’s meeting.
