Rewind / Fast Forward #31 February 26 – March 4

Hello Sunrise Toastmasters Members and guests!

Rewind from February 26

Another rejuvenating meeting took place in the North Tower (Room NT102A) of Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital and started at 7:00 AM with 9 members present.

President Summer Murphy opened our meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. Next, she handed it over to Joe Stack to lead the meeting as Toastmaster for the morning. Joe chose spring as his theme for the meeting and talked about his favorite outdoor activities such as gardening.   He chose rejuvenate as the word of the day .

Joe quickly welcomed up Tim Murphy, who delivered a prepared speech from the Story Teller advanced manual. Tim’s speech, “Trump: The Man, The Boy, and The Donkey” compared the Aesop’s fable to Presidential candidate Donald Trump trying to please every group he speaks to.  The moral is that in trying to please everyone’s wishes, you can lose everything in the process.  Staying in the family, the next prepared speaker was Summer Murphy.  She also spoke from the Story Telling advanced manual.  “Ironing Boards and Wedding Vows” was a personal story told to her by her grandmother Flora Belle Alman.  The story interwove the difficult life of a daughter in a migrant share cropper family meeting her future husband (W.B.) and having a loving marriage for over 70 years.  Although their marriage “ceremony” consisted of preacher using an ironing board as a make shift alter in his home, Flora and W.B. were “just as married as everybody else”.  In Summer’s view, maybe even more married than everyone else, despite the lack of pageantry at their vows.

Next came Table Topics with Topicsmaster Angela Marsh. In a fun round of questions in a grab bag format, Angela was able to involve everyone in responding, including herself!.  Our newest member, Rita, had wonderful response that included career reflections of the military and medicine, and being every woman to a certain extent.

As the meeting drew to a close, Toastmaster Joe Stack welcomed up Dave Burr to evaluate the meeting.  Bryan Alston evaluated Tim’s speech.  Mike Stipanov evaluated Summer’s speech. Rita Sturdivant delivered the Timer’s report for the first time in that role. Dave thanked everyone present for their contributions and made a point share what an amazingly informative and personal experience Sunrise Toastmasters meetings are for everyone in attendance, and how he enjoys it immensely every week. Joe Stack closed out the meeting on time at 8:00 am.
