Hello Sunrise Toastmasters Members and guests!
Rewind from May 13
This meeting was held at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in our usual meeting room (NT102A) with 7 members present.
VP of Membership Tim Murphy opened our meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance before quickly turning the meeting over to Summer Murphy to lead as Toastmaster for the morning. Summer made the membership aware that the first Friday the 13th of the year is officially “Blame Somebody Else Day” and wove that theme into the meeting with a humorous approach. With amazing ease, the members adapted the theme as though they had secretly been blaming others for years. I blame their parents. In that spirit, the Word of the Day was blamestorming. And yes, although it sounds made up, it is actually a word.
The first speaker for the day was Jenna Willingham, who completed her competent communicator manual with a project titled, ‘What If’. Jenna inspired the audience to pursue their ideas, even though the ideas may have rough edges at first, they can be nurtured and brought to fruition. Her speech included all of the areas of concentration from her nine previous speeches, including body language, organization, visual aids, etc. Well done Jenna!
The second speaker, Dave Burr, spoke about eugenics in America, in a speech titled, Planning Parenthood. He covered the shockingly disturbing history of eugenics practiced in the U.S. and how certain groups were targeted. As always, Dave’s research brought light to a topic that may otherwise have gone unnoticed.
Topicsmaster Zach Sullivan led the group in a thought-provoking series of table topics that fit into the blamestorming theme. The club went eight rounds in table topics before moving into evaluations. A special thanks to Tim Murphy and Walt Abele for evaluating the speeches, to Walt Abele for serving double duty as Timer/Grammarian, and to Steve Stephens for evaluating the meeting in general.
