This week’s meeting kicked off with a warm welcome from our President, Tina Joe. This was followed by the One World, Many Voices segment led by Toastmaster Sophie, who shared an observation that her environment is primarily made up of individuals who present a highly professional appearance. She reflected on the importance of balancing professionalism with authenticity and concluded by encouraging everyone to be themselves.
Afterward, Tina Joe briefly introduced the Bias Flag and explained its purpose. The Bias Flag is a tool our club uses to promote inclusive and mindful language throughout our meetings.
The meeting was then turned over to our Toastmaster of the Day, Chang Yu, who promptly filled the vacant Timer role and noted that we had no guests in attendance. Chang Yu introduced the Word of the Day, optimal, defined as “the best or most favorable point, degree, or amount possible under a specific set of restrictions.” He illustrated the definition with a personal example, explaining how he initially thought leaving for work 30 minutes early was sufficient, but later realized that 40 minutes would have been the optimal amount of time. With that, he guided us through an engaging and well-organized meeting.
We had two speakers this week. Toastmaster Diana delivered a speech titled “Three Books that Genuinely Changed How I Think,” in which she shared key lessons from several influential books. Some of the main takeaways included that worrying about things beyond your control is not worth the stress, the importance of managing expectations, and shifting your mindset from “it’s not going to work” to “you’re going to do great.” Diana concluded by asking fellow Toastmasters, “What is the one book that changed the way you live?” Several thoughtful responses were shared in the chat.
Our second speaker, Toastmaster Danielle, delivered a speech titled “The Power of Vulnerability,” which explored her journey toward understanding that vulnerability and emotional honesty can be strengths rather than weaknesses. She described how many people hide behind a mask during public speaking because they fear others will discover what they do not know or realize they are not the expert. Two memorable quotes from her speech were: “The truth will set you free,” and “If you tell the truth, you never have to remember anything.”
Table Topics were led by Toastmaster Yuko, who centered the session around the Word of the Day by creating a theme of the optimal summer holiday. Questions included: What is your optimal travel destination? What is the most optimal food you have tried while traveling? If you could host a Toastmasters meeting anywhere to create the optimal experience, where would it be? and What is the number one optimal item you always bring when you travel? The theme encouraged creative responses while providing plenty of opportunities to incorporate the Word of the Day.
Next, we moved into our Breakfast of Champions segment for those on the East Coast of the United States, also known as Lunch or Dinner of Champions depending on your location, which marks the evaluation and feedback portion of the meeting. Toastmaster Kenny led the evaluation team, highlighting how smoothly the meeting was run and specifically commending the Table Topics Master for encouraging participants to use the Word of the Day. Speaker evaluations were delivered by Toastmasters Savvy and Tina Joe, who praised strong vocal variety, effective use of hand gestures, and excellent use of pauses. Savvy also noted that Diana’s speech was part of the Pathways program and emphasized the importance of progressing through Pathways. Toastmasters Gulnara and Norris helped keep the meeting on track by serving as Timer and Grammarian, monitoring speech timing and tracking filler words throughout the meeting.
The meeting adjourned right at 7:59 AM EST, and we are already looking forward to next week’s meeting.
