This week’s meeting kicked off with a warm welcome from our President, Abdulrahman. This was followed by the One World, Many Voices segment led by Toastmaster Summer, who shared an insightful observation about differences in how people cool their homes around the world. She noted that in Mexico, households tend to cool only the room in use and avoid running air conditioning while away, resulting in less waste. In contrast, the norm in the United States is to run central air continuously, often cooling unused spaces. Summer concluded with a thought-provoking remark from a friend that the United States consumes resources at an unsustainable rate, with central air serving as just one example.
Abdulrahman then briefly introduced the Bias Flag, explaining its role as a tool our club uses to encourage inclusive and mindful language throughout our meetings.
The meeting was then handed over to our Toastmaster of the Day, Abigayle, who confirmed that all roles were filled and noted the presence of two guests before leading a round of introductions. Abigayle introduced the Word of the Day, camaraderie, defined as “a spirit of friendly good fellowship, mutual trust, and loyalty shared among a group of people. It describes the warm bond that develops when individuals work together, share experiences, or face challenges as a team,” and strongly encouraged members to incorporate it throughout the meeting. With that, she guided us through an engaging and well-paced session.
We had two speakers this week. Toastmaster Kenny delivered a speech titled “My Toastmasters Experience,” highlighting the valuable feedback she has received during her time spent in Toastmasters. She shared how she discovered Toastmasters and described it as a safe space for growth. A notable takeaway from her speech was, “Public speaking doesn’t require perfection; it requires progress.”
Our second speaker, Toastmaster Diana, presented “Three Timeless Lessons in Leadership” from the Dynamic Leadership Pathway project Writing a Speech with a Purpose. Diana spoke about three key lessons: the courage to ask hard questions, the integrity to listen, and the flexibility to adapt plans when presented with new information. She enhanced her message with engaging historical examples that captured the audience’s attention.
The Table Topics segment was led by Toastmaster Kerstin, who centered her questions around the Word of the Day. Prompts included: describe a time when a comrade stepped in to help, recalling someone from childhood who inspired a sense of camaraderie, and identifying a family member who serves as a connector.
Next, we moved into our Breakfast of Champions segment (also known as Lunch or Dinner of Champions, depending on your time zone), which focuses on evaluation and feedback. Toastmaster Savvy led the evaluation team, highlighting how smoothly the meeting ran and commending both evaluators for providing specific, actionable feedback on strengths and areas for improvement. They also praised the thoughtful Table Topics questions and noted how Kerstin gave guests time to observe before inviting them to participate. Speaker evaluations were delivered by Toastmasters Norris and Sophie, who emphasized strong eye contact, vocal variety, effective hand gestures, and the impactful use of anecdotes. Toastmasters Gulnara and Robert kept us on track by timing speeches and monitoring filler words.
The meeting adjourned promptly at 8:00 AM EST, and we are already looking forward to next week’s gathering.
